Common Crystal Shapes & Their Meanings

Cluster

Crystals Clusters, Quartz based crystals, in particular, have naturally occurring facets at their tips. There are usually six sides, which also equate to the six chakras from the base to the third eye, with the termination point representing the crown chakra.

How a crystal grows is significant in crystal lore. Quartz crystals that are cloudy at the base and become clearer as they reach the tip represent the potential for spiritual growth. Quartz crystals that are entirely clear are symbols of alignment with cosmic harmony. A crystal pillar or large point with occlusions or flaws can lead to a traumatic or wounding period in life that needs to be cleared away for the consciousness to evolve.

Geode

Geodes are spherical rocks that contain hollow cavities lined with crystals. The name geode comes from the Greek word Geoides, which means “earthlike.” Nature creates these unique stones in a variety of ways, e.g., in bubbles of volcanic rock, where animals burrow, tree roots, and mud deposits in sedimentary rock. Over time, the air, mud, or tree roots create a hollow cavity within the stone, and the outer edges harden into a spherical shape. Then groundwater naturally dissolves and picks up a variety of minerals as it makes its way down from the surface and flows into the cavity. As the water flows in and out of the cavity, the minerals get deposited on the inside of developing geodes over extended periods of time creating crystals.

Heart

Some people love heart-shaped stones and crystals merely because of their shape. Others believe heart-shaped stones tend to emit loving vibes in combination with the properties of the particular mineral/crystal. The heart-shaped rock, crystal or gem is a symbol of love and is often exchanged as a gift of affection and love. Heart-shaped crystals are also thought to attract loving energy.

Obelisk

Obelisks are tall, narrow and four-sided stones that have a pyramid shape at the top. With the pyramid shape on the top of the piece, it can be used to direct energy in a healing grid. Placing an obelisk in your environment will help energy to radiate outward from the stone into the area where placed. Obelisks were also prominent in ancient Egyptian architecture, as the Egyptians set them at the entrances of temples.

Point

Quartz-based crystals, in particular, have naturally occurring facets at their tips. There are usually six sides, which also equate to the six chakras from the base to the third eye, with the termination point representing the crown chakra.

Quartz crystals that are entirely clear are symbols of alignment with cosmic harmony. A crystal pillar or large point with occlusions or flaws can lead one to a traumatic or wounding period in life that needs to be cleared away for the consciousness to evolve.

Pyramid

A Pyramid is a three-dimensional shape that is created by a polygon as its base, and triangles as its other faces, where all the triangles meet at a common vertex. From a metaphysical standpoint, Pyramids amplify and then tightly focus energy through the apex (the top/point of the Pyramid). A crystal pyramid can be used to draw off negative energy and blockage from the Chakras.  Gemstone Pyramids are also used to enhance and focus the inherent properties of the stone.

Sphere

The Sphere symbolizes wholeness and as is an ancient and universal symbol that represents unity, completeness, infinity and the universe as a whole. Intimately connected to the spiritual nature of our complete self, crystal spheres help to bring out integrity, clear thinking, and a better union of body, mind, and spirit. As far as energy direction, a Sphere emits energy in all directions equally.
